Jorge Valdez is a Surgeon, specialist in Ophthalmology with a Master's Degree in Medical Sciences and a Doctorate in Research in Surgery.
National Researcher level 1 from the National System of Researchers. Author of 5 books, 17 chapters and 109 research articles.
Has 25 years of undergraduate and graduate teaching experience. He has chaired more than 5 national and international Medical Associations in the field of his discipline.
Dr. Valdez has been an accreditor on two occasions of the PUIS-SMO Biennial Ophthalmology Prize, the Coparmex National Health Prize, the "Dr. Carlos Canseco"; Medical Merit Medal, the Municipality of Monterrey, the "Dr. Jorge Rosenkranz” for Medical Research, Award for Scientific Career from the College of Surgeons of the State of Nuevo León, Award for Teaching and Research Work from Tecnológico de Monterrey.
Dr. Valdez is also a Fellow of the Mexican Academy of Surgery. Founding member of the National Academy of Medical Education.
Jorge E. Valdez-Garcia, MD-PhD, is the Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (EMCS) for Tecnológico de Monterrey, Chair of the Pan American Ophthalmology Foundation and he is also President of the Mexican Association of Faculties and Schools of Medicine (AMFEM).
Rodrigo Cavalcanti is Associate Professor in General Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto, an Educator-Researcher at the Wilson Centre, University Health Network, and previous Director of the General Internal Medicine Training Program, University of Toronto.
He is also a CanMEDS Clinician Educator at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He holds an MD degree and an MSc degree in Clinical Epidemiology, both from the University of Toronto, and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from the Gorgas course (University of Alabama and Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia).
He is an award-winning teacher in undergraduate and postgraduate medicine. His educational focus is on consultant skills for General Internists and promoting scholarship in residency. He has held leadership positions as Site Program Director for Education at the Toronto Western Hospital, University Health Network and as Program Director for the.
His research interests have included adverse effects of antiretroviral therapy for HIV, evidence based medicine and medical education. His educational research interests include simulation, clinical reasoning, assessment of trainee competence, and applications of cognitive load theory in medical education.
He has shared his expertise through presentations and workshops at national and international conferences and publications in leading medical education journals, and is on the planning board for the Royal College’s International Conference on Residency Education, where he chairs the annual Clinician Educator Program.
He is an award winning teacher, recognized through multiple accolades, including the Canadian Association of Medical Education (CAME), Meredith Marks New Educator Award in 2013. He has been invited to be visiting professor by universities in Canada and in Japan.
